Yummy Homemade Tortilla Recipe

Tortillas are nothing but flatbread or roti that is prepared with plain flour, corn flour or wheat flour. Tortilla is a staple food for the people of Mexico and is consumed daily. They are easily available in all the supermarkets and grocery stores out there. But at the same time they can also be prepared at home very easily. Nothing tastes better than fresh homemade tortillas.

Fresh Homemade tortillas taste awesome and super delicious. You can simply use these tortillas as wraps around variety of fillings and serve them along with any dipping sauce. Although the recipe of making tortillas is quite simple and easy still you need to give several tries to master the art. Hence, it is better that you make these tortillas over and over again at your home and also enjoy it.

Ingredients

6 cups all purpose flour (Plain flour)
11/2 tsp. baking powder
Salt to taste
11/2 cup of water
3 tsps Olive oil

Preparation

First, take the flour in a large plate and sieve it. Transfer it into a large bowl. Mix salt, baking powder and flour together. Then add oil and mix well. Make a well in the center of the flour and slowly add water. Start kneading the dough using your hands and add water as required. Do not add more water at a time.

Place the dough mixture on to the working surface and work on the mixture for about 4-5 minutes to make smooth dough. Add a little flour, if required. Place it back in the bowl and cover it with a clean kitchen towel. Let it rest for about 15 minutes. Divide the dough into 12 equal sized balls. Take one ball and roll it between your palms to make it smooth and pliable. Place it on a lightly flour surface and roll out the dough ball into thin and large circle like chapatti/roti.

Procedure

Heat a non-stick skillet or a flat pan on medium heat. Place the tortilla on the hot pan and cook over a medium heat for 1-2 minutes or until lightly browned and small air bubbles start to appear. Flip the tortilla and let it cook from the other side for about a minute. Again flip it once so that the tortilla is fully puffed up and lightly browned from both the sides.

Remove from the heat and transfer it to a paper towel lined pot with a lid to keep them warm.. Repeat the same procedure for the remaining dough balls. Your hand made tortillas are ready with an amazingly soft and nice texture. Serve them warm and ENJOY!

Tips

1. You can replace water with warm milk for a fluffier texture.
2. You can try making these tortillas with corn flour or wheat flour as well
3. Make sure that the dough is very smooth and not very sticky and firm.
4. You can make these tortillas in large volume. Just layer them properly and freeze them to use whenever you want.
