When the lining of the chest and the lungs known as pleura gets inflamed then it leads to sharp and severe chest pains when breathing or coughing. This is known as pleurisy. An infection like a viral infection can cause the pleura to be inflamed. Other causes can be pneumonia, lung cancer, blood clots in the lung, chest trauma and tuberculosis. Besides the stabbing pain in the chest, there is also fever, cough, cold, chills, congestion and pain in the shoulder.
Sometimes fluid collects in the chest cavity and this causes great difficulty in breathing. When there is shortness of breath the skin loses its normal hue and acquires a bluish color. The breathing becomes rapid and the cough becomes more persistent. If there is viral pleurisy and if the immune system is strong then it can kill the virus rapidly and settle the inflammation very quickly.
