Melasma is a common skin disorder found in young women who are in their reproductive years. Though this condition can affect anyone, it is more common among brown skinned women. It is a hormonal condition associated with the female hormones estrogen and progesterone which is why it is common among pregnant women, women who take hormone replacement therapy and women who use birth control pills. Women living in tropical climates are more likely to develop this condition because the strong sunlight often causes hyperpigmentation.
The main symptoms are dark brown patches which appear on the cheeks, nose, upper lip, forehead and chin. The patches are usually symmetrical, that is, they are identical in shape and size on both sides of the face. This can condition can cause a lot of distress and loss of confidence because it changes the way you look. However, without resorting to topical steroid creams and chemical peels you can easily improve your looks by adopting a few home remedies.

Besan and Curd
Make a thick paste with one heaped teaspoon of besan and some curd. Apply the paste all over the face and leave it to dry. When the paste is completely dry, rub it off with your fingers till you have removed all of it. Use circular motions with a little pressure on the cheeks. Wash your face with some water. Besan will thoroughly cleanse the skin and remove all dead skin cells. Curd will moisturize the skin and will keep it soft and supple.
Onion is a cheap and easy remedy to get rid of the dark patches. Squeeze one grated onion till you get one tablespoon of its juice. Mix half a teaspoon of raw apple cider vinegar with it and apply it all over the face. Keep for forty five minutes then wash your face with water. Apply regularly three times daily. The dark patches will begin to lighten after some time and will completely disappear after some months.
Remove the juice of one raw potato and mix it with an equal quantity of white vinegar. Apply this mixture all over the cheeks, chin, forehead and temples. After half an hour wash your face with cold water. Regular use, two or three times daily will restore your skin to its normal color.
Take one teaspoon of amla powder and mix it with some curd to form a paste. Apply the paste all over the face and leave it to dry. Wash your face with warm water. The vitamin C found in amla will cleanse the skin and will help in the generation of new skin cells. In addition to this, you should also drink half a cup of amla juice daily.
Grind some methi seeds to a fine powder and store it in a jar. Take a teaspoon of this powder and add a few drops of milk to form a paste. Smear the paste all over your face and after half an hour, scrub it off your face with your fingers. Wash your face with lukewarm water. Regular use will make the patches disappear very quickly.
