Talk about the tropical cocktails and you can’t escape talking about Pina Colada. The drink is the official beverage of Puerto Rico since the year 1978 and was created in the year 1954 by a Puerto Rican bartender. For him it was a challenge accepted and accomplished; however, since then the drink has become the identity of Puerto Rico and has been embraced by the world with equal delight.
The drink can be traditionally defined as a cocktail prepared by combining rum, cream of coconut, pineapple juice, and ice. The traditional garnish is a pineapple wedge or a cherry. However, the present day can witness a large number of variations of this ever-so-famous cocktail. Before moving on to its variations, let us take a look at the traditional pina colada recipe.
The Traditional Pina Colada Recipe
White Rum (Two portions)
Dark Rum (One portion)
Pineapple Juice (Three portions)
Coconut Cream (Two portions)
Pineapple Wedge or Cherry (for garnish)
Combine all the ingredients (except the garnishings) and blend them well in a blender. Pour the blended cocktail in a tall cocktail glass and put the pineapple wedge or cherry garnish on the top.
Though the traditional Pina Colada cannot be imagined to be prepared without rum, there have been people who have discovered the non-alcoholic versions of it. Here is one such recipe.
Virgin Banana Pina Colada
Ingredients (for four people)
Ripe Bananas (2 Nos)
Fresh Pineapple- diced (1 cup)
Pineapple Juice (1 cup)
Fat Free Coconut Milk (1/2 cup)
Ice cubes (3 cups)
Pineapple Wedges (for garnish)
Blend together pineapple, bananas, pineapple juice, fat free coconut milk and ice. Pour the blended cocktail in tropical glasses and serve garnished with pineapple wedges.
This particular recipe for Pina Colada makes use of no rum and blends in fresh pineapple and ripe bananas with coconut milk. A dash of ice, and your very own non-alcoholic Pina Colada is ready to serve and guess what? It even has a low calorie count.
