It is important to feed the child healthy foods which will assist in the growth and development of your little one.
Foods for a 1 year old can vary. From healthy fruits, vegetables, pasta, cereals, pasta and even meat can be introduced in your baby’s diet. Introducing different types of food at this stage helps in the development of proper food habits later in life. It is also important to remember that a child will not be able to have as much food as you would have. Since the size of a baby’s stomach is small, he or she can have limited food at one time. So it is important to feed the baby at least three meals along with two to three snacks. Cooked vegetables like carrots, cauliflower, broccoli, potatoes and green beans along with fruits like apples, peaches, pears, strawberries, bananas and apricots are excellent for a baby. A one year old baby will not be able to chew the food properly, try to avoid foods that can pose a choking risk for the child such as grapes, berries and raw vegetables.
Cereals and Grains
High in fiber, cereals and grains should be included in the baby’s diet. Apart from commercial cereal baby food, give the child small pieces of crackers, oatmeal, bread, toasted oat cereal or even cooked wheat pasta.
Once your baby is one year old you can safely introduce whole milk in his or her diet. It is a good idea to continue breastfeeding till the child is around two year old. However you can slowly introduce whole milk as well. Consult a pediatrician before doing so as some babies tend to suffer from milk allergies. Apart from milk, you can feed your child other diary products like slices of cheese and yogurt.
An excellent source of protein that is essential for your child’s growth and development, meats such as chicken and turkey are excellent foods for your one year old baby. Cook the chicken by boiling or baking it and then mash or slice them into fine pieces before feeding your baby.
One year old babies can be extremely fussy and may refuse to eat something. Instead of force feeding the child, try giving the baby something else to eat and then introduce new foods slowly. Always check for allergic reactions like rashes or an upset stomach when introducing new foods in the baby’s diet.
