Basically there are two types of drugs used for relieving symptoms of cough and congestion. They are known as – Expectorants and Suppressants. Expectorants work by helping in coughing out mucus whereas suppressants stop the cough reflex and help you stop coughing.
Which kind of drug should be taken depends on the type of problem but by and large suppressants should be avoided since they suppress the outlet of cough. If required, they should be taken only at night. Coughing is basically our bodies’ reaction towards the foreign objects in the lungs so suppressing this natural process can lead to other chronic problems like pneumonia.
For sore throat, gargles are the best solution. There are also antiseptic gargle solutions available in market. You can mix a tea spoon of these solutions in warm water and can gargle with it for fast recovery.
