Flank steak is a beef cut that is obtained from the belly of the cow. It is a boneless, red meat that is extremely flavorful and is best cooked rare or medium rare. The meat is cut into thin slices then cooked by grilling or oven broiling. To add flavor to the steak the meat is often marinated in spices, vinegar, honey, lemon juice and soy sauce.
These ingredients make the steak extremely flavorful and also allow it to cook easily due to the tenderizing ingredients like lemon juice. You can also buy meat marinades available in the market. However, it is very easy to make marinades for flank steak at home only using a few simple ingredients. Here is a simple and quick marinated flank steak recipe.
How to Make Marinated Flank Steak
Preparation Time: 20 minutes
Cooking Time: 20 minutes
Serving: 5 to 6 people
Two pounds flank steak
Two tablespoons balsamic vinegar or red wine vinegar
Half a cup soy sauce
Two tablespoons of honey
One tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
Two to three garlic cloves, minced
Half a cup of vegetable or olive oil
Half a teaspoon ground pepper
Some Kosher salt
Half a teaspoon dried oregano
Half a teaspoon dried thyme
Method of Preparation
1. Along with the ingredients for the recipe you will also need re-sealable bags, meat thermometer and a bowl. Mix the ingredients for the marinade including vinegar, soy sauce, honey, Worcestershire sauce, olive oil, pepper, salt, minced garlic and dried herbs in a bowl. Mix them well using a wire whisk.
2. Trim the fat on the flank steak and then make about half inch cuts on the meat leaving a space of about an inch. Place the flank steak in the bowl filled with the marinade and then turn over to allow the marinade to coat the steak completely. Place the steak in a re-sealable bag and pour in the marinade as well. Shake the bag well so that the steak is covered with the marinade.
3. Place the bag in the refrigerator for around eight to ten hours. To cook the steak, take it out of the refrigerator and take it out of the bag. Let the steak remain out till it comes to room temperature. Preheat the grill to high heat and coat it with olive oil. Place the flank steak on the grill and let it cook for around five to six minutes on each side on medium high heat. Check if the meat is cooked by using the meat thermometer. If the reading is around 130 degree Fahrenheit then the meat is cooked and you can now remove it from the grill.
4. Flank steak is best served medium rare and should not be overcooked else it will turn hard and rubbery. Cover the meat with aluminum foil and let it rest for around five minutes before serving. Cut the grilled flank steak into thin slices and serve with hot salsa or homemade sauce. You can also use the leftover marinade. Just let the ingredients simmer for some time in a small saucepan on low heat and then serve it with the cooked steak
