Maintain the eye hygiene of the child by wiping them with luke warm water after every two hours or as needful. Warm compresses placed on the outside of the eyelid alleviate the shooting pain in the infected eyes.
Lubricating eye drops also make the child feel better. The drops of rose water are the safest option. As the eye becomes light sensitive, which the child might not explain you, so make the room dim lighted for his comfort.
Antibiotic ointments or drops as prescribed by an eye specialist may help bacterial form of conjunctivitis. Besides these measures take care that wiping cloth, towel, pillowcases of the child is not shared by any other member of the family.
This usually affects only one eye, which has excessive watering and a light discharge. Crusting might appear in this case also. Usually, eye doctors do not prescribe medication for viral conjunctivitis, because it subsides on it’s own in a few days. Rest of the remedial measures is just the same as in case of bacterial conjunctivitis.
Gonococcal and Chlamydial Conjunctivitis
Sometimes newly born babies too are at great risk of contracting Pink eye despite total seclusion. This is because a baby can obtain bacterial infection due to her mother’s contact during birth process. Another major contributing factor is that the mother, who is infected with sexually transmitted diseases such as gonorrhea or chlamydia, can pass along this infection to the baby which can show up as Pink eye. So, it is essential that the newly born infant must be tested for this conjunctivitis. Immediate evaluation can save the child from future eye damage by antibiotic treatment.
This type of conjunctivitis is the response of the body towards some unsuitable environmental factor. Though it also causes itching, redness and excessive watering in both eyes but it is not contagious. It is generally accompanied with stuffy, itchy and runny nose.
