Mouth-Watering Chilli Paneer Recipe

Mouth-Watering Chilli Paneer Recipe Chilli Paneer is a wonderful innovation to the well known chilli chicken recipe, and symbolizes the unique amalgamation of Chinese and Indian cooking styles and ingredients. It makes use of Indian Cottage Cheese in place of chicken to suit the palate of vegetarians.

Even the vegans can prepare this dish by replacing cottage cheese or Paneer with Tofu. The recipe involves the use of cottage cheese, onions, and capsicum stir fried together in Chinese gravy to come up with an appetizing dish. When prepared without the gravy, the recipe works extremely well as a starter dish, whereas the gravy transforms it into a main-course dish. The ethnic Chinese flavors of the dish make it a favorite amongst a large number of people. The greatest thing about it is that it is extremely easy to prepare.

Serves: 4

Recipe Ingredients:

Cottage Cheese (Paneer), Cut into ½ inch strips: ¾ cups
Oil for frying

For the Batter:

Corn flour: ¼ cup
All-purpose flour: ¼ cup
Soy sauce: 1 teaspoon
Baking Powder: A pinch
Salt: as per taste

For the Gravy:

Ginger, grated: 1 teaspoon
Garlic, chopped: 2 teaspoon
Celery, chopped: 2 teaspoon
Spring onions, chopped: ¼ cup
Green chillies, cut into 1 inch pieces: 2 – 3
Capsicum, sliced: ¼ cup
Soy sauce: 1 teaspoon
Sugar: 1 teaspoon
Salt: as per taste
Corn flour: 1 teaspoon mixed in 3 tablespoons of water
Oil: 1 teaspoon

For Garnishing:

Spring onion greens: ½ cup

Recipe Preparation

1.    Mix together all the ingredients required for making the batter including all-purpose flour, corn flour, baking powder, soy sauce, and salt in a large bowl and prepare a smooth batter by slowly adding around ¼ cups of water in it.

2.    Dip the pieces of paneer in the prepared batter to coat them well. After this, deep fry all the pieces in oil over high flame till the pieces become golden brown in color.

3.    Remove the pieces from the oil and place on an absorbent paper to drain all the all from it. Keep them aside for later use.

4.     To prepare the gravy, heat oil in a work and add garlic, ginger, spring onion greens, celery, and green chillies and sauté them over medium flame for about 1-2 minutes.

5.    After this, add capsicum and fry again for few additional seconds.

6.    Prepare a paste by mixing corn flour in few tablespoons of water and whisking it well.

7.    Next, add soya sauce, sugar, salt, and corn flour paste and let the gravy come to a boil. Bring the flame down and simmer over low flame for 4-5 minutes.

8.    Once the gravy gets the desired consistency, add the fried paneer pieces to it and mix everything together properly. Make sure not to leave to much of running sauce.

9.    Serve immediately after garnishing it with spring onion greens.


Chilli Paneer can either be served as a started dish by itself, or as a side dish along with Chinese fried rice, noodles, or even bread.
