For example, Aloo tikki, cocktail Samosa, spinach cutlets, paneer rolls, cauliflower Manchurian, Pakoras and dal vada etc. You can use vegetables, cottage cheese, bread and legumes to make delicious deep fried appetizers. They are served on a large platter with small bowls of green chutney, tamarind chutney and tomato ketchup, to suit the flavour of the appetizer.
Steamed appetizers are dieters’ delight. These include cocktail idli, dhokla and momos etc. Steamed appetizers can be served with hot – spicy soups. They are low calorie and tasty appetizers. You can strike a balance by serving a steamed appetizer with a deep fried appetizer to decrease calorie intake.
Canape is a small crusty base which is topped with a topping of your choice. It is easily picked up with fingers and eaten in one go. You can make a spread of cheese, yogurt or cream as a first layer and then top it with a slice of cucumber or tomato or you can top it up with a tea spoonful of baked beans or creamed sweet corns. Fresh Fruits Appetizer
Fresh fruits make the simplest, healthiest and the most colourful appetizers. You can use black and green grapes, red strawberries and cherries, yellow papaya, mango and pineapple (cubed) and green kiwi. Fruits can be served in small bowls for individual serving or you can pierce them on a long toothpick for the convenience of your guests. Fruit appetizers are refreshing and they aid digestion when served along with fried and grilled appetizers.
Grilled appetizers are a better alternative for deep fried appetizers, if you want to cut down on calories. They are equally delicious and can be easily served asfinger foods.
Paneer cubes, whole mushroom, cubed vegetables like green, yellow and red bell peppers, chunks of onions and tomatoes are marinated in spices and lemon juice. They are pierced in skewers and grilled in oven or tandoor. You can serve them on toothpicks for easy handling.
