Signs Of Constipation Almost everyone goes through a phase of constipation, at some point of time in his/her life. It affects around 2% of US population, more commonly observed in women and elder people.

Though, normally it is not a serious issue, but it could become severe and reason for concern.

As long as this does not happen, we take our digestive and excretory system for granted, once it initates, we realize the importance of our life processes and the need to support them to help us perform better.

Are Irregular Bowel Movements A Concern

Constipation is the result of troublesome bowel movements that become less frequent and painful. Irregular bowel movements, not necessarily means there is constipation as some people normally pass feces after one or two days.

The usual start of constipation varies from individual to individual, since frequency of bowel movements is different in various people. Still, going more than three days without any bowel movements is considered a constipation problem as passage of stools after long time becomes harder and extremely difficult.

Even after improvement of diet or exercise regime, irregular bowel movements occurring for more than three days are considered initial signs of constipation. There could be intense abdominal and rectal pain, excretion of thin and pencil like stools with passage of blood at times. The affected persons may show sudden weight loss and have alternate diarrhea and constipation cycles.

Signals Of Severe Constipation

The important signs include usual straining pressure on every bowel movement or at least for one fourth of the bowel times, passing of hard stools with incomplete evacuation and passing stools for two or less times in an entire week. Possessing two or more of these signs for at least 3 months, validates one as sufferer of heavy constipation.

Signs Of Constipation In Babies

For babies, there exists no certain number or schedule of bowel patterns and poo varies in texture and form each day. Constipation in babies can be judged by discomfort, crying or irritability before passing poo, hard –dry pellet forms of poo, foul smelling poo and wind every now and then, loss of appetite and a hard appearing tummy.


Even very liquid form of poo is a sign of constipation in babies as it gets slipped past the hard poo present in baby’s lower intestine. Never consider that as diarrhea when it is accompanied by any other factors of constipation. On the contrary, it becomes a strong and valid evidence of constipation in babies.

People Who Are At Risk

A sedentary lifestyle or confinement to bed, old age, pregnancy, inadequate fluids intake, low fiber diet, use of sedatives or medications for lowering blood pressure and treatment like chemotherapy puts one prone to constipation problems.
Constipation – a sign for severe problems

Constant constipation may be sign of severe medical disorders like auto immune diseases, hormonal imbalance or colorectal cancer. Amongst children, a congenital disorder, called as hirschsprung’s disease may be there which occurs due to absence of nerve cells within the colon. Some children may develop constipation due to their unwillingness or fear of using toilet. Ignoring or restricting bowels to pass amongst children may be the cause for development of constipation problems in near future.
