Pregnancy can be a time when women revel in the smoothness and supple texture of their skin. While some women positively glow during their pregnancies, others experience acne and break outs reminiscent of their teenage years.
This is because of the rapid and fluctuating hormonal levels. These enhance the oil production from the sebaceous glands which are present in the skin. Hence the skin becomes oily and starts to break out.
Although pregnancy acne diminishes on its own once the hormonal levels stabilize, a lot of women have to grapple with pregnancy acne and break-outs throughout their nine months. This can be a source of acute misery and discomfort. However with some tips, acne break outs can be treated and kept at bay.
Cleanse Your Face
You must religiously wash your face with cool water at least thrice a day. Use a mild cleanser. Do not go over the top with medicated cleansers and facial scrubs as they may have an adverse effect on your already sensitive skin.
For severe break-outs it is better to use a medicated acne cream. However do consult your practitioner on the safety of using these creams and take all necessary precautions.
While it is normal to overdo the cleanser, keep a moisturizer ready at hand. Use a mild one specially formulated for oily skins.
Sometimes skin that is stripped of its natural oils is also more prone to acne.
Now is the time to say bye-bye to your make up supplies. If your skin is acne prone during pregnancy, it would be prudent to put away all the blush, bronzer and concealers to the back of your cupboard. Make up tends to clog the pores making you more prone to acne.
Skin Care Products
Choose products like soap and body wash that are oil free and won’t clog pores. Use these only on a daily basis.
Don’t Pick And Poke
Do not try and pop or scratch the pimples. These can cause you to have a severe bacterial infection and pus. Moreover the picked pimples will leave a scar. Acne scars leave their mark and are resistant to skin procedures so refrain from popping the zits.
Eat well. Load up on fruits vegetables and juices. Drink at least 10-12 glasses of water for that clear skin. These will flush out the toxins from your body and leave your skin looking moist and clear.
Do not bathe for too long. Use a cleanser like cetaphil which is mild on your skin. The water should not be too hot. Keep it luke warm. Extremely hot and cold water can dry out your skin. If you like to bathe in the tub, keep unscented bath oils ready to use. These help to moisturize your skin.
Lastly it is important to keep acne prone skin protected against the harmful effects of the sun, so do wear a sunscreen before stepping out. Take your essential vitamin and calcium supplements and eat foods rich in omega fatty acids. Keep your room well ventilated and humidified.
