Every year many children get involved in road accidents. Some of them even lose their lives for no fault on theirs’. Children get hurt in road accidents while running on the road without an escort or driving a bicycle or a car without proper knowledge about road safety rules and while playing in the streets. You cannot hold your child’s hand forever, thus it becomes your duty to teach children road safety rules at a young age.
Ways To Teach Children Road Safety Rules
Catch Them Young
Start teaching your children road safety rules as soon as they start walking. Tell them not to go out in the street without an adult. Do not let the child play outside alone. You never know when she/he will run out after a ball or a toy and become a victim of a vehicle.
Hold the hand of your child while walking on the road and teach her/him to cross the road. Tell your child to look left and then right before crossing the road. Once in a while let the child decide when to go on the other side of the road to make sure that she/he understands road safety rules.
Teach them By Example
Children are keen observers of their parents’ behavior. They copy what they see, so you should abide by the rules of the road to teach your child road safety rules. Do not take a wrong turn, jump traffic lights or drive rashly. Do not take calls on your cell phone and teach your children to do the same. Teach them to learn the movement of traffic, like the pedestrians walk in the opposite side and vehicles like a bicycle, van, scooter or motor cycle move on the same side as the car.
Take Them To A Traffic Park
Most cities have a traffic park in the area where you can teach children road safety rules. Take your child to the park and teach her/him all about traffic rules. Teach her/him about the function of traffic lights, like red light means that you have to stop, yellow means to prepare and green means start moving. Teach them the function of a speed breaker and how to cross it. A figure flashing on the traffic signal means that you can walk to cross the road. Let your child press the lights. You can take along other children in the neighborhood and all the kids can play and learn road safety rules.
Teach Them Driving Safety rules
Before giving a car or a bike to a teenage child, teach her/him driving safety rules. Tell the child not to overtake from the wrong side, at a traffic signal stop the car on the side where she/he wants to turn, like if the child wants to turn right then the car should be parked on that side for easy traffic movement on the other side.
Teach your child not to blow horn unnecessarily in a traffic jam. Teach her/him to follow speed limit set by the authorities to prevent accidents. If you are careful and you teach children road safety rules at the right age then be sure that your child will return home safely.
