Acne is the biggest bane known to man in the field of dermatology and skin care. Billions of people world over suffer from acne and breakouts causing their skin to look aged, haggard, blemished and scarred. The field of acne remains one of the most widely researched areas and a plethora of treatment modalities have been chalked out in order to get rid of it.
Acne is nothing but small pustules or pimples that erupt on the surface of the skin. Genes, oily skin, puberty and a bad diet are some of the leading culprits for skin acne. Here are some ways to battle acne and reduce it.
Ways To Reduce Acne
Wash your face often
It is important to wash your face and keep it scrupulously clean at all times. This gets rid of excess oil and grime, which can otherwise damage your skin. Wash your face twice a day with a gentle and mild cleanser. Make sure the cleanser is pH balanced. This will keep pimples and acne at bay. Washing the face becomes even more important especially if you have excessively oily skin.
Do not touch your face or pick at your pimples
Most people have the common urge to touch their pimples, burst them or pick at them. This can cause infection, further breakouts and skin scarring. Acne scars are stubborn and often difficult to get rid of. So ensure that you do not pick or burst the pimples.
It is important to open clogged pores and remove blackheads, which are primarily responsible for acne.
Get a steamer and steam your face for 10-15 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Gently scrub your face afterward with a mild scrub to get rid of dead skin cells and impurities. This will keep pimples miles away from your skin.
Egg whites are an excellent remedy for tightening the skin and reducing oiliness in the skin. Use the white of an egg and apply it evenly all over your face. Let it dry and wash it off after some time. This will get rid of the excess oil on your skin and reduce the incidence of acne.
Eat a healthy diet
Banish junk foods like chocolates, pizzas, fries and burgers from your diet as these can cause your skin to break out badly. Stick to fruits, vegetables, fruit juices and fibrous foods like oatmeal. Omega-3 fatty acids found in flaxseeds, salmon, mackerel and olive oil are exceptionally good for the skin. Following a healthy diet will lead to a soft, clear and acne-free skin.
Rule out food allergies
It is possible that you may be suffering from acne due to some food allergy. Rule out the common culprits and allergens that may be causing the breakouts to occur. It can be something as simple as a bar of chocolate that leads to pimples. Stay away from these foods.
Oily dandruff flakes from your scalp can lead to massive breakouts especially on your facial skin. Check and rule out dandruff by visiting a trichologist. If you suffer from dandruff, take immediate remedial steps to get rid of it.
Stay out of the sun
Sun exposure and damage can cause acute redness and inflammation on acne prone skin and can actually cause the acne to aggravate. If you suffer from a severe break out, stay out of the sun until the acne has subsided or reduced to an extent.
Honey and cinnamon
Apply a paste of honey and cinnamon powder on the pimple-affected area of your skin. Cinnamon has medicinal properties that help to reduce pimples. Repeat this treatment 2-3 times in a day for several weeks to see visible results.
Gently massage your facial skin with pure olive or coconut oil. A massage will help to increase blood flow to your face and also help to remove built up dirt and sweat from the face.
Do not use make up
Make up and pimples are a nasty combination. Make up invariably clogs the pores, increases oil and sebum production and aggravates pimples and acne. Use oil free make up if it is essential. If you have an option, do not use make up at all as the chemicals will immediately react with your skin.
See a dermatologist
If your acne is severe and chronic, it makes sense to see a doctor. The doctor will probably prescribe an anti-zit cream, which contains trace elements like salicylic acid. These chemicals are considered beneficial in the treatment of acne and pimples. You may have to visit a dermatologist regularly to see long-term, effective results.
Try to rub toothpaste on new pimples. Toothpaste contains silica which when applied to the surface of the pimple, immediately dries it out. This allows the pimple to form a scab and fall off.
Reduce caffeine intake
Intake of copious amounts of caffeine in the form of coffee and colas can give you severe bouts of acne. Coffee has caffeine, which triggers the brain to produce stress hormones like cortisol. Cortisol is primarily responsible for pimple breakouts and acne. So make sure you reduce your coffee intake and drastically curtail its consumption. The same goes for tea and chocolates.
Not getting enough sleep at night will set you up for a host of skin problems including acne. This happens because the skin has not had enough resting time to recover and repair itself. Make sure you get at least 8-9 hours of quality sleep.
One of the best ways to a beautiful and glowing complexion is to drink gallons of water. This is one liquid you can never have enough of. Drink at least 8-10 glasses of water to stay hydrated. Water balances out the pH balance of your skin leaving it supple, nourished and less prone to acne.
So make sure you take in adequate amounts of fluid in the form of water and juices. Severe acne can be tackled with the help of professional dermatological and laser treatments especially acne pits and scars, which require a more aggressive treatment approach.
