How To Prepare Chinese Noodles At Home

Anybody and everybody in India is familiar with the Chowmein. This is one classic noodle that has found its way into the kitchens and hearts of millions around the world. Even street side fast food restaurants have started selling this popular dish. And if you are willing to make Chinese noodles at home, preparing some Chowmein can be the first step in your endeavour to create great Chinese noodles. Here is how you can make Chowmein.

Chowmein - the classic noodles


Noodles – 1 packet
Water – 2 cups
Oil – 1tsp
Salt – to taste


1. Take a pan and boil water. Add the noodles of your choice to the boiling water.

2. Add the oil and salt. Wait till it becomes tender. But, make sure that it is not overcooked and prevent it from becoming extremely soft.

3. Remove from flame and strain the noodles. Wash it with cold water to prevent it from sticking to each other. Use these noodles for preparing Chinese noodles at home.

Chicken chowmein

The chicken chowmein is a very common dish that is easily available at fast food joints and is a tasty recipe that can be prepared with a combination of chicken, vegetables and noodles.

Chicken chowmein


Egg noodles – 1 packet
Chicken – 1 cup
Capsicum – 1/2 cup
Carrot – 1/2 cup
Beans – 1/2 cup
Cabbage -1/4 cups
Eggs – 2
Pepper – 1tsp
Soya sauce – 1tsp
Salt – to taste
Ajinamoto or Chinese salt – 1 tsp
Oil – 1tsp
Tomato sauce – 1 tsp
Chilli sauce – 1 tsp


1. Boil the noodles and keep aside.

2. Chop the vegetables and keep aside. Shred chicken into small pieces.

3. Heat oil in a pan and fry the vegetables.

4. In the meanwhile, boil the chicken pieces with a little bit of salt.

5. Saute the vegetables for sometime and add the boiled chicken pieces.

6. Toss all ingredients in high flame and gradually add salt, pepper and Soya sauce. Mix well and add the boiled noodles.

7. Mix the noodles with the vegetables and chicken. Sprinkle Ajinamoto or Chinese salt.

8. Prepare some scrambled eggs in another pan. Add this to the noodles and toss the entire mixture.

9. Add the tomato and chilli sauce before serving. However, if somebody does not like to add sauce, serve the Chinese style chicken noodles without the sauce.

Vegetarians can prepare this recipe without eggs and chicken. All you need to do is toss the fried vegetables with the noodles and add the other ingredients.

American Chopsuey – a favoured variation with the noodles

The American Chopsuey has also become quite famous in restaurants all over the world. But, there is a common belief that it cannot be prepared at home.

Let’s make it easy for you and you’ll be able to make some amazing American Chopsuey with your favourite noodles.

American Chopsuey


Noodles – 1 packet
Oil – 1 cup
Capsicum – 1/4 cup
Carrots – 1/4 cup
Cabbage – 1/4 cup
Chicken – 1 cup
Chopped garlic – 1 tsp
Egg – 1
Soya sauce – 2 tsp
Corn flour – 1 tbsp
Pepper – 1 tsp
Tomato sauce – 2 tsp
Salt – to taste
Ajinamoto or Chinese salt – 1 tsp


1. Boil the noodles and keep aside. Take a pan and heat the oil. When the oil is hot, slowly lower the noodles into the hot oil. Make sure that you have enough oil to deep fry the noodles. In a few minutes you’ll notice that it turns crispy and light brown in colour. Remove it from the oil and keep it on a tissue paper. Then transfer it to the serving plate.

2. Taking about 1 tsp of oil from the pan and saute vegetables in a separate pan. Add the shredded chicken pieces and fry with a little bit of garlic. Add salt and pepper.  Mix in the Soya sauce and toss all the ingredients on a high flame.

3. When the vegetables are slightly done, add water to the mixture.  Let it boil.

4. Dissolve corn flour in half a cup of water and pour it over the vegetables and chicken. As the gravy becomes thicker, mix in tomato sauce. Sprinkle Ajinamoto or Chinese salt over it.

5. Take a pan and fry an egg. Break the egg in such a manner that it  allows the egg yolk to remain intact.

6. Finally, its time for assembling the American Chopsuey. In order to do this, arrange the vegetable and chicken gravy over the fried noodles and then keep the fried egg over it. Serve hot.
