A vital part of your makeup kit, makeup brushes are available in a range of shapes and size. With a variety of uses and bristle types, makeup brushes are probably one of the most important and also the most neglected part of your kit.
Our makeup brushes tend to accumulate dirt, bacteria, dead skin cells, oils and makeup residue over a period of time. Improper cleaning and care of your brushes can lead to skin problems and chances of an infection. It is thus vital to know how to clean makeup brushes properly
Makeup Brushes Cleaning Products
There are a range of cleaning products available in the market which can be used for removing makeup and dirt from your brushes on a daily basis. These products are available in local beauty shops, professional beauty salons and retail outlets. All you need to do is spray on the makeup brush cleaner on the bristles and use a tissue to wipe them clean. If you are using expensive brushes with animal hair then it is a good idea to invest in a good quality makeup brush cleaner.
How to Clean Makeup Brushes at Home
Although these cleaners are quite effective in cleaning your brushes, they can be quite expensive especially if you need to clean your brushes on a regular basis. As opposed to this certain products available at home can help you clean and disinfect your brushes quite effectively. Here are some simple techniques of how you can clean makeup brushes at home.
Use Baby Wipes
Apart from cleaning your baby’s bottom, baby wipes are also quite effective in cleaning your makeup brushes as well. Immediately after using the brush, use a fresh baby wipe to clean the brush immediately. This simple technique allows you to clean your brushes on a regular basis thus preventing dirt and makeup residue from building up on your brushes
Make a Soapy Solution
This is probably one of the best and widely used ways of cleaning makeup brushes. In a bowl filled with warm water add some soap free facial cleanser along with some tea tree oil. Tea tree oil is a great anti fungal and anti bacterial product that can be used for disinfecting your brushes. Dip all your brushes in the water and let the bristles remain soaked in the soapy solution for around two to three minutes.
Every thirty seconds or so swish the brush around so that the product buildup on the bristles is dissolved completely. Once this is done, remove the water from the soapy solution and wash them under running water. Pat dry with a soft towel and squeeze out the excess water. Place the brushes on a soft, clean towel and allow them to dry completely before molding back the bristles to their original shape.
For making the soapy solution, you can use some clarifying shampoo or baby shampoo instead of the face wash.
Mix two tablespoons of vinegar in water and use this solution to clean your brushes. Just place the brushes in the vinegar solution for some time before rinsing off with warm water. Squeeze off the excess water and then dry the brushes on a towel.
To clean nylon brushes use a mild facial cleanser to clean the bristles directly instead of placing them in a cleaning solution.
