One of the major global issues we are facing today is pollution and throughout the world countries are searching for solutions to keep our planet clean and healthy.
Knowingly or unknowingly, when we spray pesticides, perfumes, herbicides, driving vehicles, celebrating festivals and littering, we are polluting the land, water and air in our surrounding.
Pollution leads to many diseases and allergies and ultimately upset the healthy living of the people. There are many things that as an individual or as communities every one of us can do to reduce pollution.
Ways To Sop Pollution
The first and foremost thing to reduce pollution is avoid littering. Discontinue the habit of throwing the wrappers, empty cans; polythene covers etc. on public places. Whenever you see litters in your surroundings be a role model and clean the litter and the area.
Recycle The Used Products
Take effort to recycle most of the used products and for this collect plastic, paper, cardboards, aluminum etc. in separate bags and send them to recycling units close to your area. Otherwise the scares land will get depleted easily and in future we may have to allocate more of our valuable natural habitats for landfilling.
Stop Draining Chemicals to Storm Drains
Many people have the bad habit of draining the waste or used chemicals, pesticides, toxins, motor oil, soaps, detergents etc. into the storm drains.
If you happen to see any such practice, report immediately to the concerned authorities. This is because, the storm drains flow to rivers and finally to sea, where fishes, aquatic animals, plants, animals etc. face the consequences.
Hence, always dispose such harmful chemicals in a proper and safe manner with the help of your local administration and recycle the used filters and motor oil.
Install a compost pit which is readily available in the market in your yard. Dispose all of your kitchen and garden waste in this pit which over a period of time turns in to a healthy, organic, nutrient rich fertilizer. This fertilizer can be used in your garden and you may discontinue the use of harsh and hazardous chemical fertilizers.
Use Environment Friendly Products
Instead of chemicals, use organic and chemical free alternatives such as herbicides and pesticides. This reduces a considerable amount of chemicals washed into storm drains. Similarly use environmentally safe products for washing your car.
Reduce the Usage of Motor Vehicles
Motor vehicles are releasing carbon monoxide and add to the pollution and global warming. Hence, try to walk for a short distance rather than using your private vehicle or use public vehicles like bus or train. It will be ideal if people commuting from same place share the vehicles for their travel to and back from office.
Wherever possible plant a tree, as plants absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and release oxygen. Thus plants play an important role in keeping the environment clean and healthy.
Whenever you get a chance, discuss with others on how to control pollution, as it boost the enthusiasm in others and some of them may turn to avoid pollution. Always remember the 3 R’s, reuse, reduce and recycle things and materials to keep the pollution at bay.
