Exposure to dirt, pollutants or excessive styling can leave your hair dull and damaged. In fact many people have to deal with frizzy, damaged hair on a daily basis. Blow drying, coloring and the use of styling tools like hot rollers, straightening or curling irons can all contribute to the problem of hair damage and frizziness.
Sometimes too much exposure to environmental factors such as the harsh rays of the sun along with environmental pollution and dirt can lead to gray hair, hair loss and split ends which are actually signs of hair damage. Stress and insufficient nutrients in the diet are some other factors that can lead to unmanageable, dull hair.
These factors can strip your hair off the natural moisture, leaving it extremely dry, brittle and unmanageable. Our scalp contains sebaceous glands which are present around the hair shafts. These glands secrete natural protective oil known as sebum which protects and moisturizes each individual hair shaft. This oil also provides that shiny look that is characteristic of healthy hair. When the hair is damaged or the glands are blocked due to dirt, there is less of sebum production which in turn can end up leaving the hair dry and frizzy.
Hot oil treatment for hair is an excellent way of resolving this problem. This treatment can help in adding moisture and shine to the hair, thus making it soft and extremely manageable. It conditions the hair, giving it greater shine and thickness. Moreover the oil coats the hair strands and protects it against further damage
Hot Oil Treatment: How it Works
Hot oil treatment products are available in the market and all you have to do is pick them off the shelf, heat the tube of oil in warm water or in a microwave and apply it to damp hair. Wrap your head with a towel or cover it with a shower cap for an hour and then wash your hair clean with a moisturizing, mild shampoo.
In addition to this, a hot oil treatment for hair at home also is quite simple. For a DIY treatment, just choose the oil that you want to use for the treatment. Ideally olive oil, canola oil, almond or jojoba oil along with essential oils are quite effective in moisturizing dry, damaged hair.
Now heat the oil in a double boiler or in a microwave. For the double boiler method, heat some water and place it in a flat bottomed pan. Now pour some oil in a bowl and place it on the hot water while ensuring that the water does not enter the bowl. Once the oil is hot enough, remove the bowl from the water. Now dip your fingers into the warm oil and rub it on your scalp. Once this is done, apply the oil to your hair as well. Use a wide toothed comb to detangle the strands as you apply the hot oil. This also ensures that the oil is evenly distributed from the roots to the tips of the hair.
Now take a towel and dip it in warm water. Remove the towel and squeeze out the water. Wrap the towel around your head and leave it on for thirty minutes or so. Wash your hair with cool to lukewarm water using a mild shampoo and then condition it. A weekly hot oil treatment for four to five weeks will soon help in restoring the shine and bounce to your hair.
In addition to do it yourself and store products, hot oil treatments are also available in salons as well. Although they are expensive, these treatments done by professionals are quite effective and are especially recommended for people who have extremely dry and brittle hair. If the hair is extremely damaged then micro silicone conditioners that heat up on their own along with a heating cap may be recommended. Although this salon treatment is pricey it does help in repairing damaged hair quite effectively
