Shrimps or prawns are one of the most preferred sea-food. From restaurants to homes, everyone loves eating shrimps. Shrimps and prawns, although biologically belong to different classes; are often referred to as one or the same in culinary art. While shrimps are basically smaller in size, prawns refer to a slightly bigger shrimp. While British prefer calling them ‘prawns’, North Americans prefer the name ‘shrimps’. Well, it all boils down to the dish and the taste, isn’t it? Let’s find out on how to prepare shrimps before cooking.

Preparing the Shrimps

This is the first and foremost thing before you cook any shrimp dish. If your fish vendor hasn’t cleaned the shrimps, make sure you do it before cooking. First of all wash the shrimps in clean water and then remove the shell, head, tail and the veins. Hold the tail firmly and de-shell the shrimp carefully. It is very easy; hence do not fret about it. You can leave the tail if you want to. Some dishes require the tail for presentation.

Another very important part of cleaning shrimps is deveining, that is removing the vein. You can clearly see a black thread running through the shrimp. Make a slit and remove the vein. This vein, if not removed can often lead to digestive problems. Make sure you remove any traces of the vein. Your shrimps are ready for cooking. Rinse finally with cold or tap water.
