Estimated time required for preparation: 10-15 minutes
Estimated time required for cooking: 7- 9 hours
Required Ingredients For Italian Beef
5 pounds of rump roast
16-20 mozzarella or provolone cheese slices
1 teaspoon of garlic powder
1 teaspoon of dried oregano
1 teaspoon of black pepper
1 teaspoon of dried basil
1 teaspoon of onion powder
1 teaspoon of red pepper flakes
2-3 packages of Italian seasoning
1 teaspoon of dried parsley
1 can of low sodium beef broth
½-1 teaspoon of salt
1-2 small bay leaves
1 slow cooker
1 large tong
1 sharp knife
1 cookie sheet or baking tray
Method of Preparation
1. Take the beef roast in a colander and wash it thoroughly to remove all kinds of impurities from it. You may trim off the fat if you like or you may also leave it. Once the beef is completely rinsed, grab it with a pair of large tongs and place it in the slow cooker.
Next, top the meat off with the garlic powder, Italian seasoning mix, onion powder, salt, freshly ground pepper, red pepper flakes, dried parsley, dried oregano, dried basil and the bay leaves. Make sure you spread the spices all over and around the beef, so that all portions of it get equal sharing of the seasonings.
2. Next, pour the beef stock over and all around the meat and then put the lid on the slow cooker. Now you can adjust the timings according to your convenience. If you want to cook the meat for quite a long time, you can do so by setting the slow cooker on low and cook the beef for 8 hours. Or if you can’t wait too long for your meal, just set the slow cooker on high and cook the meat for a good 6 hours. Check the beef occasionally and add some more beef broth if the meat appears too dry.
3. Preheat your oven to 35 degrees Fahrenheit. Once you are ready with the beef, turn off the slow cooker and take out the meat from it. Let the meat cool down for a couple of minutes and the start shredding it with two forks. Shred the meat finely so that you don’t get any larger chunks in it. Once done, transfer the shredded beef into the slow cooker and heat through for another 5 minutes.
4. Next, slit open the hoagie buns vertically from one side and let the other side stick on. Then stuff each hoagie bun with good generous amounts of shredded beef. Place two slices of cheese over the meat and press the sandwiches slightly to seal the contents in them.
Then wrap up the sandwiches separately in aluminum foils and place them on a cookie sheet. Insert the cookie sheet into the preheated oven and bake the sandwiches for 10-15 minutes or until the cheese turns bubbly. Finally, serve the sandwiches with the dipping sauce that you have in the slow cooker.
