Pina Colada is actually a sweet rum based drink that is made by combining rum with pineapple juice, cream of coconut and ice. It is usually served after shaking or blending the drink along with ice. It is often garnished using maraschino cherry or pineapple wedge, or sometimes both. It is the official cocktail of Puerto Rice for several years since 1978.
This drink is known for being one of the very few cocktails that are similar to blended beverages such as slushies and smoothies. It is sometimes even served on the rocks. If you wish to serve the blended version of the drink, make sure to use a powerful blender in order to get a smooth pina colada.
A typical pina colada recipe comprises of four key ingredients, namely, rum, cream of coconut, ice, pineapple juice, and ice. It is very important to know that cream of coconut is not the same as coconut and you must never replace cream of coconut with coconut milk to make this cocktail.
However, if you are unable to get cream of coconut around you, you can follow the below mentioned method. Simply add 2 ounces coconut milk with a tablespoon of sugar.
Besides this, you also need to add a little ice as coconut milk is much thinner in comparison to cream of coconut and will result in a drink with a watery consistency. So add more ice in order to compensate this.
Pina coladas can be made in large batches if you are planning to serve it in a party or make them individually, one-at-a-time as well. To make them in bulk, simply multiply the recipe mentioned below as many times as required, then pour all the contents together in a blender and make the desired number of pina coladas.
You can also serve it in a pitcher and store in the freezer till you are ready to serve. The alcohol will prevent the drink from freezing and you will be ready to serve it with just a stir. To create an on-the-rocks version, simply leave the blending process and mix the other ingredients along with ice and stir.
If you are looking for the non-alcoholic version of the delicious pina colada for people who do not drink alcohol, then follow the same recipe given below; simply leave out the rum from it.
It is ideal to serve Pina Colada in a Collins glass or Hurricane glass and garnish with the help of pineapple slices and cherries to make it look appealing and inviting.
