There is practically no one who does not want to have clear and blemish-free skin. Skin discolouration and melasma plagues millions of people all over the world.

While home remedies can temporarily reduce superficial skin darkening, hyper- pigmentation is tough to remove and requires the intervention of cosmetology to show the desired results.

The sun is the biggest enemy of the skin and is majorly responsible for creating pigmentation. Advances in the field of cosmetic procedures have come out with and developed specialized skin whitening treatments, which are ideally suited for your skin type. Let us see some of these procedures.

Effective Skin Whitening Treatments

Bleaching

Bleaching is probably, one of the most widely used techniques to remove pigmentation and superficial darkening of the skin. Most salons and parlours offer bleaching services.

Bleaching uses specific products like hydroquinone and some other bleaching agents in combination to give a more even and fair complexion. The trick to bleaching is to apply the bleach only on the affected area and not the normal surrounding skin. This is to prevent lightening of the surrounding skin. Once the desired effects have been reached, the use of bleach should be ceased.

Regular sessions of bleaching may be required over a period of a few months to see visible results. Sun protection is also crucial to minimize further damage to the skin tone.

Metacarpus Scaber Extract

This is a botanical plant, the extract of which is used as a skin-whitening agent. It helps to minimize the production of tyrosinase, thus preventing the formation of the melanin pigment, which leads to skin darkening. Since it is more natural, it is said to be less irritating and more effective.

Glycolic Acid

Glycolic acid acts as a peel and is used by professional dermatologists to target aggressive pigmentation. The glycolic acid peels are highly concentrated, so it is better to exercise some prudence and use them only under the guidance of a reputed dermatologist.

The glycolic peels consist of concentrated alpha hydroxyl acids, which make up the major component of the peel. Several sittings are required to see desired results.

Beta-Carotene

Vitamin A or beta-carotene as derived from carrot oil is said to be a skin friendly product, which effectively helps to combat dark patches and pigmentation.

It acts on the tyrosinase receptors thus blocking the production of melanin in the skin and reducing pigmentation. This can be taken in the form of topical creams or supplements.

Home Remedies

If you are suffering from mildly patchy skin, this can be easily combated at home with simple home remedies. Applying the juice of a lemon acts as natural bleach and makes the skin tone fairer.

Similarly, one can use besan and fresh cream to make the skin clear, soft and supple. Buttermilk also acts as a natural cleansing and whitening agent and helps to reduce scars, blemishes and patchy skin.

Kojic Acid

Kojic acid has been hailed by the cosmetic industry as a suitable skin-whitening product. It is a new entrant and helps to again reduce the melanin production in the skin. The kojic acid is taken in the form of facial treatments, skin creams and topical lotions.
