Bursitis is a medical condition which is often mistaken for arthiritis as bursitis is characterized by pain and stiffness in the joints. Bursitis initially occurs in the form of dull pain which slowly becomes more intense and is also accompanied with inflammation. It is generally caused due to over use of the joints.
Repeated pressure, bruising or bumping on the joints causes bursitis. Bursitis is known under different names like house maid’s knee, clergy man’s knee and bakers cyst. It affects various parts of the body like the joints in the shoulder, elbow, ankle, hip, heel and base of big toe. These areas contain bursa, a sac that is filled with fluid.
This fluid filled sac protects the ligaments and tendons. Excessive physical activity causes swelling of the bursa and thus inflammation of the surrounding tendons, thus producing pain in these different areas. It affects both adolscents and the young. Once a person experciences bursitis, it tends to occur again and again.

Pineapples is one of the best natural home remedies for treating bursitis. Bursitis is basically characterized by inflammation which causes pain. As a first step the inflammation has to be reduced. Pineapples contain an enzyme called that reduces inflammation, thus automatically reduces swelling.
Turmeric contains an active ingredient , a yellow pigment called curcumin. Curcumin contains effective anti-inflammatory properties. It functions like cortisone in the body. Turmeric also reduces inflammation and thus pain caused by bursitis. It is very effective and has no side effects.
An ice pack works best for any kind of inflammation and swelling in the joints. An ice pack or frozen ice wrapped in a cloth can be applied to the swollen area for about twenty minutes. This process is repeated for three to four times a day. Ice acts by improving blood circulation and thus reduces swelling.
Mullein is a herb from which tea can be extracted. A warm compress can be made by dipping a clean wash cloth in to the mullein tea. This compress can be applied on the affected area regularly. Repeating it through the day when ever required helps relieve from pain and swelling. It also helps in preventing stiffness.
As it is already known vitamin c works wonders and is used to treat many different ailments. Vitamin c basically works to strengthen the immune system which is very important to recover from any kind of health condition. Vitamin c is known to improve the proper of bursa, hence when the bursa is healthy chances of inflammation and swelling are reduced. Vitamin c can be consumed in the form of orange juice everyday. Recommended dosage of vitamin c is 16gms per day.
Castor oil is highly recommended for bursitis. Topical application of castor oil helps in relieving pain. Take a clean and dry wash cloth and pour a few drops of castor oil. Place it on the affected area and wrap it in a plastic wrap. Enclose this plastic wrap in hot or warm towels which provides extrenal heat. The heat and the castor oil togther help in dissipiatin pain.
