Easy To Make Curd Rice Recipe Curd rice is a popular South Indian dish that is commonly cooked in every South Indian household. It is a simple, easy to cook and delicious to eat dish. It is an essential part of South Indian meals. It is mostly eaten at the end of the meal to neutralise the effects of spicy main dishes.

Curd rice has many health benefits. It improves the digestive system and strengthens the immune system. It is especially beneficial to cure diarrhoea and other stomach related problems. It is also recommended for people suffering from nausea or vomiting. It has a cooling effect on the digestive system. Curd rice is an ideal dish to be eaten on a hot summer afternoon.

Curd is a rich source of calcium, vitamin B and proteins. Some people are unable to digest milk, for them curd is the best substitute as it provides all the goodness of the milk without causing indigestion.

Curd rice is happily eaten by children and the aged people because it is easily chewable. You can safely feed young children with curd rice as it is healthy and nutritious as well as easy to digest.

To make delicious curd rice use fresh and sweet curd. You can add fresh fruits like grapes, pomegranate and chopped pineapple pieces just before serving to make the dish more tasty and appealing. To increase the richness of this simple dish you can add a few pieces of cashew nuts and raisins.

It also serves as a complete dish and you can eat it as it is or accompanied with a pickle or chutney of your choice. You can serve it with urad dal too.

Rice- 200 grams
Onion- 2 small
Green Chilli- 2 piece
Curd -1 cup
Salt to taste
Mustard Seeds- ½ tea spoon
Red Chilli powder- ¼ tea spoon
Curry Leaves – 8-10
Ghee or oil- 2 table spoon


1. Boil rice in water till done. Strain and keep aside.
2. Peel and chop onions lengthwise. Wash and slit green chillies along the length.
3. Beat curd to dissolve lumps and keep aside.
4. Heat ghee in wok, add mustard seeds and fry till it splutters. Add green chilli and curry leaves and fry for one minute.
5. Add onions and fry till they are translucent. Add ¼ cup water and simmer till onions are tender.
6. Add boiled rice, curd and spices. Mix well and simmer for 2 minutes. Remove from fire.
7. Transfer the rice in a flat dish and garnish with fresh coriander. Serve hot with pickle or green chutney.


The make curd rice the rice should be a little overcooked and the dish is a little more fluid in consistency. To increase the fluidity you can add more curd than is mentioned in the recipe.

The best part of curd rice is that you can prepare it with leftover boiled rice and it will taste as good as freshly made dish.

Add a pinch of asafoetida to enhance the flavour of curd rice.
