Early Pregnancy Week By Week

The nine months of pregnancy can be explained properly through the week-by-week guide so that the person will be more confident and prepared. The beneficial advice or suggestion given week wise can be followed all through the pregnancy period. This article focuses on the early pregnancy week by week.

Week 1 and Week 2

Foetus

The time of conception is difficult to be determined. The due date has to be calculated from the starting of the previous menstrual cycle. For the purpose of calculation, the woman is said to be pregnant before she has conceived.

Going to be the Mother

In the beginning of the menstruation cycle, nearly 20 eggs called ova are found to be filling the fluid sacs called as follicles. If the menstruation period exist for 28 days then after 14 days, ovulation will occur. The follicle releases an egg which moves down the fallopian tube and waits for the sperm to fertilize.

It means that the woman is most fertile 14 days after the menstruation started or one or two days after that. It is better to try for pregnancy during this period. If the egg is matured, it reaches the uterus and will be waiting for the sperm to fertilize it. It is not necessary for a woman to get disappointed if she does not become pregnant in a month as she will have only 25 percent chance of becoming pregnant.

Points to Remember During these Weeks

A preconception visit to the doctor has to be made in order to know clearly the risks of any genetic diseases that might arise or any environmental hazards that might be caused. The doctor has to be consulted to learn the necessary lifestyle alterations to be made by the woman during the pregnancy in order to give birth to a healthy baby.

It is important for every pregnant woman to take 0.4mgs of folic acid every day. The folic acid that is consumed few months prior to the conception were observed to be reducing the defects of the neural tube such as spina bifida.

Week 1 and Week 2

Week 3

Foetus

If the egg and the sperm had successfully fertilized, the embryo will be present in the uterus which is of the size of a pin head. It does not look like a foetus or a baby. The embryo is just a group of few cells that are multiplying and rapidly growing. The cells that are present in the outer layer will transform into placenta while the inner layer will be called as embryo.

Going to be the Mother

The woman will not identify any changes in the body during this period. It is important to remember that the menstruation period is not missed still during this period.

Points to Remember During this Week

If you are not sufficiently patient to know about the pregnancy, it is fine now to take home pregnancy test. This test is as consistent as the blood test or urine test carried out in the clinic and the results will be out straightaway.

Week 3

Week 4

Foetus

The fertilized egg will get into the uterus lining and will get implanted.

Going to be the Mother

The woman will be expecting the menstruation to return during this week and when it does not happen it will be the primary sign of pregnancy. There might be little bit of spotting seen when the embryo is implanted in the uterus. Though the pregnant woman might not feel any changes that are happening inside her womb, the formation of amniotic cavity, fluid filling in it and the placenta that provides oxygen and nutrients for the nourishment of the baby are formed inside the uterus.

Choosing a variety of foods that are healthy from the food items that are recommended and drinking about 6 to 8 glasses of water per day is essential during this week. It is not necessary for the pregnant woman to eat for two people as she needs to take an extra of 300 calories per day when she is pregnant.

In the early pregnancy, it might happen that the intake of food diminishes due to the morning sickness. If the woman is taking already right food then the baby will receive whatever it needs.

Week 4

The Important Changes Happening Inside

The fertilized egg will grow further and a tight sac filled with fluid will be formed around the growing fertilized egg. This sac is called as amniotic sac. This sac is helpful in forming a cushion like structure for the embryo to grow. The placenta that is created around the baby will help in transporting the nutrient material from the mother to the growing baby. The wastes from the baby are also transferred.

Later on, dark circles in the form of eyes are formed with the formation of a primitive face. The face development takes place with the formation of lower jaw, mouth and throat. The blood cells will take their shape and blood circulation will start. The length of baby will be about 1/4th inch by the end of one month. This size can be compared with the size that is smaller than the rice grain.
