Ban Saturated Fats and Trans Fats
Saturated fats are the number one cause of high cholesterol in the body. They are found in abundance in red meat, egg yolks and whole milk. Go in for skimmed dairy products and choose healthier oils like olive oils which are low on saturated fats. Avoid trans-fats like the plague. These are found in refined and processed foods like biscuits, cakes, pastries, chips and cookies. They are artery-damaging foods and have the highest numbers of bad or LDL cholesterol.
If you are suffering from high cholesterol you will need to make drastic changes in your dietary habits. Say bye-bye to fatty foods and stick to whole grains, beans, nuts like walnuts, tofu and skimmed dairy. Eggs can be had in the form of egg whites. Include a lot of oats and wheat bran all of which are high on complex carbohydrates. Non vegetarian foods should be curtailed especially beef and red meat. Stick to lean meats like fish and chicken which are good for the health of your heart.
Garlic and Coriander
Garlic is said to reduce the amount of blood cholesterol so include liberal amounts of garlic in your diet. Coriander is said to raise the level of HDL cholesterol in your body. Have chopped coriander in your veggies, dals and curries.
How you cook your food matters. Try sautéing, baking and grilling in lieu of deep frying. Sautéing and baking use less oil. Use non stick ware cooking utensils which require you to use minimal oil and ghee.
Move your Body
Along with dietary changes, you will also need to incorporate some form of exercise in your daily routine. A brisk walk is ideal for heart health but you can take up any form of exercise that makes you feel good and helps you to burn calories. Exercising gets your body rid of harmful cholesterol.
