A sore throat is one of the most common symptoms of a cold or flu and can be extremely uncomfortable and painful. It normally occurs due to a viral infection. A severe throat infection is accompanied by chills and fever, swollen tonsils and lymph glands, difficulties in swallowing, irritation and pain in the throat.
A sore throat can occur due to the common cold, influenza, measles, diphtheria or acute tonsillitis. Here are some simple and effective home remedies to get rid of sore throat.
Home Remedies For Sore Throat
The juice of a lime is an effective remedy for a sore throat. Squeeze the juice of a lime with honey into a glass of hot water and drink this. It will give immediate relief from sore throat. Alternately, add a pinch of salt and pepper on the surface of the lime and press it into the lime with the help of a knife. Now suck on this juice throughout the day to help get rid of the pain.
Prepare a steaming cup of tea by adding a piece of cinnamon, a few cayenne pepper corns, 2-3 cloves, a small piece of grated ginger and some cardamom. Ad some honey for sweetness and drink this tea black. It will give immediate relief from a sore throat.
Te made form chamomile leaves are very relaxing and soothing on the throat so have at least 2-3 cups of chamomile tea.
Add a pinch of turmeric to a cup of hot milk and have this every day at night just before sleeping. This helps to soothe the throat and enables a person to sleep better at night.
Hot water Gargles
This is by far the most recommended remedy. Nothing cures a sore throat faster than regular gargles with hot water and salt. Do this as many times in a day as you can, preferably 3-4 times in a day. You can also gargle with aloe vera Juice which is an effective home remedy for a sore throat.
Basil or tulsi is another effective home remedy for the treatment of sore throat. Boil some basil leaves in a pot of water and gargle with this water throughout the day. Alternately, you can have basil infused tea.
Grate a small piece of ginger into hot water. Add some honey to it and sip on this throughout the day. Ginger helps to soothe an itchy, sore throat.
A dry throat can become uncomfortably itchy so it is very important to drink plenty of warm water throughout the day.
Keep Nasal Passages Clear
Make sure your nasal passages are absolutely clear. Breathing with your mouth open can make you susceptible to a throat infection. Do regular steam inhalation with the help of a decongestant to keep your nasal passages clear.
Use a heating pad on your neck at night in case of acute pain. The heat from the pad may give some superficial relief from an achy throat. Sore throats if severe must be shown to the doctor and a course of antibiotics should be taken to get rid of the infection. In the meantime, take adequate rest and precautions.
