Beriberi is a disease which occurs when there is a deficiency of vitamin B1 or thiamine in the body. This disease mostly occurs due to alcohol abuse. Heavy consumption of alcohol deprives the body of essential nutrients. Because of alcohol, the body is unable to absorb and store thiamine. In rare cases beriberi is also caused by genetic factors. The disease is inherited due to this.
The body is unable to absorb the thiamine from the food which is essential for the conversion of carbohydrates into glucose. There are two types of beriberi. The wet beriberi affects the cardiovascular system and the dry beriberi affects the nervous system. The disease often begins in infancy because the mother’s milk lacks in thiamine and because of its slow growth, the symptoms manifest themselves in adulthood.
The main symptoms of dry beriberi are loss of sensation in the hands and feet, difficulty in walking, pain, paralysis of the lower legs, muscle dysfunction and mental incapacitation. In wet beriberi there is shortness of breath, increased heart rate, swelling in the lower legs and wakeful nights because of short breath.
