Morning Sickness During Pregnancy

Morning Sickness During Pregnancy The first thing you get to hear when you are pregnant is the question, “Do you suffer from morning sickness?” So, morning sickness is quite a familiar word in the pregnancy dictionary. The nausea and vomiting of pregnancy is normally called morning sickness.

This is also one of the most common symptoms of pregnancy. But, let not the word confuse you. Although it is called morning sickness, it can happen at any time of the day.

Duration Of Morning Sickness

Generally, morning sickness starts about the sixth week of pregnancy and comes down or stops by the 12th week. There are women who suffer it throughout the nine months! It varies from women to women. Some women experience it only in the morning, but others suffer it throughout the day.

Causes Of Morning Sickness

Till date, scientists have not been able to prove what triggers morning sickness in pregnant women. Sounds strange, but true! It is believed that the variations in hormones and the increased sensitivity to odors in pregnant women might be one of the reasons for nausea.

When To Worry?

Morning sickness is not harmful to the baby or mother, provided the latter is well hydrated. If a pregnant woman loses plenty of water by vomiting, it might lead to a condition called hyperemesis gravidarum. This requires medical attention, as the person needs to be given drips to retain fluids. Passing of dark urine, dizziness, thirst and tiredness are some symptoms of dehydration in pregnant women. You should meet the doctor if you vomit more than five times a day, if the vomit is blood stained or if you lose too much weight.
