Mexican Honey Puff Pastries

Total Time: 30 minutes


1 tbsp shortening
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt
¾ cup water or as much required
Cinnamon sugar or honey butter


Add flour, baking powder, salt and shortening in a medium bowl. Mix it gently with a spoon, leaving some space for air to fill in.
Add cold water to the bowl and mix till a stiff pastry like dough is formed. It is essential in Mexican pastries, to make the dough in the right consistency.

Toss the dough in between with a fork so that it remains sufficiently moist. Gather the dough into a ball and divide it into two halves. Shape the dough into two flattened rounds. Roll the dough and cut 3 inch squares or diamonds from both the halves.

Take a wide pan, pour the oil and heat it over medium temperature. Add the dough diamonds few at a time and fry till they are golden brown. While frying you will observe that the dough becomes puffy. If they are not then the dough is not of proper consistency, and the Mexican pastries will not taste good.

Finally drain them and place them on paper towels. Once the oil is removed; sprinkle cinnamon sugar on top of them as much as you prefer or dip them lightly in honey butter.

The dessert is the last course of a meal or “comida” as we know in Mexico. In general a Mexican dessert consists of heavy desserts which include pudding, pies, Mexican pastries, custards or any cooked dish. This is followed by fresh cut fruits and coffee. These Honey Puff Pastries can be eaten at any time of the day and not only while having desserts in a full course meal.
