With health issues on a rise, and awareness among people increasing, the demand of organic food is growing, and more and more people are resorting to it. There is a huge debate on organic versus conventional food, so let us first see and understand what organic food is. When farmers grow crops or poultry yield, they feed it with pesticides and fertilizers for removing pests and getting better crop quality and quantity. But these are laced with chemicals that leave their residue in the yield and lead to fatal diseases like cancer, heart diseases and more. So very recently the importance of organic food is gaining ground as they are free of chemicals and do not pose hazards to the health and environment.
The advantages of organic food are
Organic food items are grown without the use of chemicals on them. The crop is healthier and the soil and environment are conserved from pesticides. The animals are not bound all day in the organic farms and are not given hormone shots for better dairy production. In short, all the produce is naturally yielded.
Organically grown crops do not have fertilizers and pesticides added to them. Hence, the soil is healthier and the water bodies around theses crops are free from the effects of harsh chemicals. Chemicals kill the microorganisms in the soil and water. These microorganisms are important to the environment as they help in storing the carbon which is necessary for global climatic control. So organic farming is the best to conserve our environment.
Healthy For The Body
Harmful diseases like cancer and heart ailments have risen due to the effects of pesticides and fertilizers in the food that we consume. Animals also contain traces of antibiotics and hormones that are fed to them which travel inside the human body once we consume them. Organic food has 40% more antioxidants than conventional foods and contains salicylic acid which prevents the arteries of the heart from hardening.
Better Taste And Nutrition
Organically grown fruits and vegetables are always tastier as they retain their natural flavor which does not get altered by the use of chemicals. Also, the natural mineral salts, vitamins, phytochemicals in the plants are maintained hence more nutrition is provided by these organic food items. The antioxidant powers are higher which help in fighting ailments.
Poultry and farm animals which are organically fed are proven to be more fertile. The effect of pesticides and chemicals reduces fertility in animals and their body loses resistance and various health issues develop in them, adversely affecting fertility.
The intake of preservatives and hormones through animals and plants can lead to weight gain in humans. So if we are watchful of our weight and want to control it, then we should resort to organically grown food.
Since no pesticides and chemicals are sprayed on crops for better yield, the crop growth is lesser and fewer in quantity. Hence, more labor is required to nurture the crops and the cost of production goes up, hence organically grown crops are always costlier and out of reach for a majority of consumers.
Lesser Shelf Life
Organic food is not sprayed with pesticides or contains preservatives and hence they do not last long. This could lead to added cost of losses if the food item is not sold out quickly enough and it cannot be transported to far-off places due to its short life span.
Most farmers grow conventional crops due to their durability and cost effectiveness. So the availability of these organic items are scarce in the market and are available at certain places, and on particular days only.
