The term “macrobiotic” finds its name from a Greek word which means “long life”! This dietary philosophy was devised by a Japanese educator by the name George Oshawa who believed that great health can be achieved in simplicity. This diet is all about renouncing food options like animal products, refined food as well as processed food too.

Whole Grain Intake Level And Limits
As one is well aware of that macrobiotic diet talks about the intake of whole grains as the staple ingredient and thus there are certain rules in this regard. The food intake should be consisting of atleast 50 % to 60 % of the meal portions at a given time. The whole grain that one can intake are corn, buckwheat, brown rice, whole wheat berries, barley, millet and rye. Other whole grain food substances like noodles, pasta, rolled oats, flour products, bread and baked goods can be taken but only on occasional instances.
Fruit Intake Guidelines
Fresh fruit options which can be consumed while on this diet regularly or majorly are peaches, apples, melons, pears, grapes, apricots & berries, but, tropical fruit options like mango, papaya and pineapple are not to be consumed at all.
A person following this diet is strictly asked to have water only when thirsty; however other beverages like tea without the caffeine are allowed to be taken. This diet stresses on the use of purified water in either cooking or for drinking purposes.
This macrobiotic diet stresses on the regular intake of soups and the ones using miso, fermented soybeans and shoyu are highly preferred in this respect.
Some Animal Products Are Allowed
Even though it is well known that macrobiotic diet consists of vegan products, some of the animal products such as fish and sea food are allowed to be eaten twice a week. However, it should be taken into consideration that the sea food & fish options given to macrobiotic diet followers are limited and they can consume only ginger, mustard, wasabi, grated diakon and horseradish out of so many others. It must be noted that these products are only allowed as these help in the detoxification of the body cells which help in elongating the lifespan of humans.
Vegetable Intake Guidelines
The intake of vegetables in the diet per day according to the macrobiotic diet guidelines should be of at least 30% to 40% and only one third of it can be consumed raw. The rest amount needs to be taken in steamed, baked, boiled or sautéed form only.
The intakes of sweets or desserts are limited in this diet to only twice or thrice in a given week and care should be taken that only foods which are naturally sweet is to be consumed.
