Excruciating knee pain which lasts for prolonged periods of time can ruin the quality of a person’s life. While knee pain is normally linked with the natural ageing process, it can even afflict younger people, including children. Younger individuals may suffer from knee pain as a result of some severe injury.

Debilitating knee pain can change a person’s outlook towards life completely. Severe knee pain which persists for months, or even years, can cause a person to lose interest in life itself. Most doctors prescribe medication or recommend surgery (as a last resort) to mitigate knee pain.

7 Causes Of Knee Pain

There are many factors which can trigger knee pain. Doctors generally diagnose the actual causative factor or factors behind knee pain, depending on the symptoms which an individual may exhibit. Some of the common causes of knee pain have been delved into in this article.

Blood Circulation Problems

Blood circulation problems can trigger knee pain. Deep Vein Thrombosis or the formation of a blood clot can trigger sudden and excruciating knee pain. People who lead sedentary lifestyle or sit for hours on end are more likely to suffer from deep vein thrombosis. So, to prevent knee pain due to poor blood circulation, make exercise an integral part of your daily life.

Erratic Lifestyle

Inconsistent exercise patterns can also cause sudden knee pain. People who have lead a sedentary lifestyle for the major part of their life, may experience shooting pain in their knees when they start exercising vigorously all of a sudden. Engaging in high intensity exercises without warming up gradually can also generate unbearable pain in the knees.

A sudden fall, running for extended periods of time on uneven surfaces, or jumping from heights, can injure the delicate components of the knee including the bursae, tendons, ligaments, cartilage or the bones. These knee injuries if left untreated, can lead to regular and extremely excruciating knee pain.

Sometimes a knee injury can cause bone chips or fragments of bone to get stuck inside the knee joint. This can also cause severe swelling and pain in the knees.

Arthritis

One of the main culprits behind severe knee pain is arthritis. Different types of arthritis including septic arthritis, tuberculosis arthritis, hemophilic arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout and rheumatoid arthritis (to name a few) can cause severe knee pain. Medications can control knee pain caused by arthritis to a certain extent.

Diseases

There are many disease conditions which can produce severe knee pain.  Meniscal cyst, tumors in the knee, Osgood- Sclatter disease are just a few disease conditions which can lead to very bad knee pain.

Ageing

As mentioned earlier, with the natural ageing process comes many bodily aches and pains including knee pain. The tendons and ligaments of the knee, deteriorates progressively as one advances in age. So knee pain is an inevitable part of growing older.
