Winter is coming. We do enjoy winter but this season requires extra care of the skin, as it gets extremely dry due to low humidity, especially for people with normal to dry skin .If not taken care of, chilly winter weather can lead to itching, flaking and even cracking of the skin.
Here are seven basic face care tips that you should follow to keep your face beautiful and healthy even in the harsh winters
It is important to keep your face clean, but do not over do it as this may cause the skin to dry. Cleanse your face not more than two times a day using a hydrating cleanser. Avoid using cleansers that contain glycolic or salycilic acid as these will dry out the skin further.
Avoid Hot Water On Face
We love to take a hot bath on cold winter mornings. But hot water can damage the skin and strip natural oils from the skin making it dry. Instead try using lukewarm water to wash your face. It will not harm the skin, keeping it hydrated.
Moisturize Immediately After Cleansing
Moisturization is a very important part of a skin routine irrespective of the season. But in winters you need to take extra care while moisturizing as the surroundings are deficient in moisture and your skin requires proper hydration. Immediately apply a moisturizer after cleansing the face, this helps lock in the moisture after a face wash. Use an oil based moisturizer instead of a water based moisturizer that will help to retain the dampness for longer. You can even use a natural moisturizer like aloe vera. It is extremely beneficial in locking in the moisture of the skin and also has various other benefits for the skin.
Protect Your Face
Most of the people think that sunscreen is to be used only in summers when the sun is over the head and in winters it can be avoided as the sun is always hidden But this is a completely wrong notion. Even though the sun is not visible, its harmful ultra violet rays penetrate our skin and can cause damage. So sunscreen application is a must even in the winters whether you are indoor or outdoor. Also keep your face covered if you are going outside this will protect the face from direct cold winds that dry the skin.
Exfoliation is important is winters as it gets rid of dead skin cells that accumulate on the skin due to dryness and hinder the moisture absorption by the skin. Scrub twice a week with a gentle exfoliator and then pat dry with a soft cloth. Also use a mild scrub to exfoliate the lips as lips tend to chap in the winters, a lot. you can use sugar to exfoliate your lips, but do it gently.
Keep Your Body Hydrated
It’s important to keep you body hydrated from outside as well as from within. Drink plenty of water and eat fruits and vegetables that have a good water content like tomato, apple, orange, cucumbers and carrots. Eat food with higher fat content like flak seeds, fish, meat with good fat content.
As skin tend to loose more moisture in winter because of low moisture content in the atmosphere, it would be very favorable if you use a humidifier in you house or room, that will help maintain the moisture content in your surroundings and will keep your skin hydrated and supple.
