New mothers often take excessive amounts of coffee to keep themselves awake. However, they should consider that their baby might lose sleep as well because caffeine is transferred via breast milk. Because caffeine cannot be quickly excreted by the babies like adults, they will sleep less, become irritated and cranky. Hence, cutting back on caffeine intake is beneficial.
Like coffee, chocolate also has caffeine as part of its ingredients and it can make your baby fussy. Do not remove it from your diet completely but take it in moderation to ensure that your caffeine intake is not more than 300 mg per day.
An excellent way to keep a mother hydrated is providing her with freshly squeezed juice of orange and other citrus fruits. Nevertheless, these foods have some compounds which can cause a diaper rash, fussiness and spitting up in your baby because they irritate a still-immature GI Tract. Reduce intake of citrus fruits for getting Vitamin C and instead opt for mango and papaya which are also rich in this nutrient.
If you have had the habit of having more than a few drinks or you are a heavy drinker, it’s time to cut back when you have to breast feed. An occasional drink with dinner is acceptable but huge quantities can cause weight gain, drowsiness, weakness and deep sleep amongst babies.
Eating spicy foods to your diet will often make babies fussy and irritated for a few hours. If you do want spice, go for flavors that can add the zest but without any heat such as taking lime juice with chicken rather than hot sauce.
That wonderful slice of garlic bread that you love will not be appealing to your baby. This is due to the fact that the odor of garlic enters the milk and its aroma can be irritating for the babies.
Allergies to peanuts are most common amongst families and a breastfeeding mother should proceed with caution before she chooses to add peanuts to her diet. One should research family history to learn if any allergies exist and abstain from peanuts if they do otherwise problems like wheezing, eczema, hives and rashes will develop in the babies.
A wheat allergy in the baby can be indicated if the baby develops symptoms like bloody stools, obvious pain and crying when you nurse after having pasta or sandwich.
Cow milk and other dairy products like cheese, ice cream and yogurt have allergens which babies do not like. They can enter your breast milk if you consume these products and can lead to vomiting, insomnia and eczema in your baby so they should be avoided.
This food item usually has mercury as a component which will find access to your breast milk and to your baby. King mackerel, swordfish, tilefish and shark have to be avoided whereas salmon, catfish, light tuna and pollock can be eaten once or twice a week.
